Cllr Thomas Collier - Newark Town Council (Castle)
I feel honoured to have been elected to a local representative role as a Town Councillor. I will listen to and where appropriate try to represent residents in need, regardless of their political allegiance or none.
As I said before 4th May, I will use any influence to promote a socially balanced and historically sensitive approach to development. To this end, I have participated on the planning committee and am continuing to learn about council processes as well as other organisations. I will scrutinise any proposals on the basis of effects on people's lives, freedoms and the cost of living.
I will continue to work in the third sector in a separate and non-political career, where I can contribute and draw experience from the community in a different way. While I will work with other independents and parties to protect and improve the environment, I will also bring scepticism to concepts and consensus that I personally find unrealistic and counter-productive, such as net zero targets. The majority of the focus must and will be local and towards cooperation but there is sometimes an overlap to wider issues.
I think the town council can play a positive part in community life, valuing the urban and rural environment, and inform other decision-making bodies.
I am thankful to those who participated in this exciting election and to the hugely effective support I have had from the Independents for Newark group. After the summer break, I will ensure there are ways I can be contacted whether through social media or local government website. I would add for the public interest that most meetings are open.
ONE YEAR ON …
Alongside attending our usual meetings and participating in community work, I serve on the Planning Committee. I also play a role in organising events, finding collaborative efforts with colleagues particularly beneficial and productive. I am eager to engage more with charities, local groups and individuals. There are numerous tasks ahead, and my goal is to enhance the community life of the town by the end of my term.
TWO YEARS ON …
Since May 2023 I have been an IfND Town Councillor for Castle Ward, Newark. I am vice chair of the planning committee and chair the Events, Arts, Culture and Twinning committee (and sat on the festival planning working group). I am particularly interested in the historical heritage of the area. In my professional work I am a Financial Resilience advisor at Citizens Advice including cost of living outreach at a local food bank. I have got to know many people affected by cost of living and inflation issues, as well as those in sudden change of personal circumstances who need guidance. I am pleased when people who live or work in the area get in touch either in relation to Town Council projects or with other issues where I may be able to help.
